The trailer for this movie looked like it had all the right ingredients going in. But after watching it, I'm not sure Ron Howard was the right director for it. I love Howard's work, he has given us some of the best cinemas; but in this case, I did not enjoy as much as I thought I would.
Right from the start with Gabriel Basso's voice over, the movie was headed in a direction which I was not expecting. The tone of it was a little too "sunny", as opposed to the darker side of things which was where the story was headed for.
Speaking of Basso, I was not a fan of his performance. He did not bring out any emotion in me, and there was a scene where he had to deliver more than a few sentences in one sitting and I wasn't convinced. Was it the writing? Or was it his inability to make the scene more powerful?
Also, when you have the great Glenn Close looking like a different person, why not have the cameras on her more? It was only towards the end that we had a little bit more of her; and she was, of course, great.
I thought this could be the movie to give Close another nomination or her first win, but after watching it I think only Amy Adams deserves one. Only because Close didn't have enough screentime where she was displaying some serious acting skills. But with the slim pickings of this year, who knows?
