This title, News Of The World, sounded more interesting than the actual movie we were given. The focus was never on the news reading part, but entirely on the relationship between Tom Hanks' and Helena Zengel's characters.
As Tom Hanks' movies go, I don't recall a more lacklustre one than this. Not that this wasn't good, it was still a solid movie. While one has come to expect Tom Hanks' greatness in all he does, and while there was that "performance", there just weren't enough in the script for him to "perform".
It brings to mind Hanks' earlier movie Captain Phillips, where it required Hanks' performance in that final scene to show humanity in order to move the audience. Similar to this one, except that Captain Phillips had a lot more from beginning to end to capture the audience, whereas this one had less.
Paul Greengrass' choices in showing off the landscape and putting his actors in the middle of the town, felt real - as if you could feel the sand in your face. There was real production value here to deliver the realness of it all.
But I found myself more interested every time Hanks' Captain Kidd read the news to the people. And there just wasn't enough of that.
