Netflix struck gold with this one as there were literally three different rooms with the most minimal setup (few tables and chairs and computers, that's it; and one toilet), and majority of the budget went to some great talent who only needed to act with their voice.
And the result was an award worthy performance from Jake Gyllenhaal and a great thriller from Antoine Fuqua.
Gyllenhaal looked even more buffed up than when he was in a superhero movie. And he carried this movie effortlessly. Half of that credit must go to the writer Nic Pizzolatto who created this very flawed character that you were not sure you could root for because of a past that slowly got revealed by Fuqua.
And even with just their voices, everyone of the actors came through with a lot of emotions, especiallyw ith Riley Keough, Peter Sarsgaard and Eli Goree.
There was, however, one drawback as I was watching this. And that was guessing what was in the next plot. Not taking anything away from the writing, just that it would take a lot to surprise someone who has watched too many movies.
But even without action, even without visuals, what Fuqua was able to achieve from simply having the camera stayed on Gyllenhaal the whole time as events outside unfolded was spectacular.
