I'm guessing the weak parts of the story were not written by James Wan. His horrors usually have quite the competent storyline in the universe that he creates, and in Malignant, a lot of things looked very lazy.

The "powers" of the evil Gabriel were never explained. For what he ended up to be, there were never any reason how he could manifest the things that he were able to do and yet still could be in the physical plane.

In turn, Annabelle Wallis' character should never had been able to view in a third party perspective.

The twist was a welcomed one. But to get there, and then to later understand what we were dealing with, there were a lot of mud to trudge through. Perhaps that's why the little twist was a welcomed one. Otherwise this movie would have been so bad.

There was one scary scene in the first act. That was it.
