Here's a fine example of doing everything by the book and still failing.
Lisa Joy probably had a good script here. The execution, though, failed quite miserably.
There was also some identity crisis going on here. It felt like the movie started off filming and aiming to be some kind of a slow burn thriller, but then later on, for whatever reason, they decided to make it a noir crime solving mystery.
The cast here did all they could. But the dialogue was wonky at times. And the editing sometimes felt jarring.
Hugh Jackman looked like he gave it his all (as usual), and he was the only reason that I was able to keep my focus on the movie.
Daniel Wu here has proven that his acting ability is better than when he had to speak in Mandarin or Cantonese. And I think he hasn't spoken Chinese in a while that he didn't even realize he used the Cantonese version of "friend" but every other Chinese sentences were in Mandarin. Unless it was on purpose than it didn't come across the screen well.
And then there was a gun fight scene in the movie that made no sense at all, though all the actors involved committed to it fully.
But if this was director Lisa Joy's first movie, with the experience, her next film may be even better; especially when she can write as well.
