The marketing for this movie felt like a straight-to-TV effort. So I was very surprised at how good this movie actually was.
The main surprise here was Alexis Louder. Even though her name doesn't show up until the two more famous gentlemen's, but make no mistake, she was the star. She may not feel like a lead, but I really liked her in this role. She came with charisma and acting chops, and she held her own beside Gerard Butler.
And Frank Grillo can do no wrong in my book. He is always fun to watch because he knows what he is bringing to the table and he always delivers.
What really caught my attention from the beginning was the way Joe Carnahan introduced each character. He really gave them an identity with their dialogue, and more often than not, they were humorous. Immediately I enjoyed the characters of Louder and Chad L. Coleman right from the start. And the humour and smart writing carried on throughout the movie.
Carnahan knows how to shoot action, and not just fighting; but the action storytelling. Action make sense under his direction (which immediately made me think of how different and probably better Snake Eyes may have been if he directed that).
This was a really fun watch and it will probably be one of the more memorable ones this year.
