[Review] Passing (6.5/10)

Title - Passing
Production - AUM Group, Film4, Flat Five Productions, Netflix
Starring - Tessa Thompson, Ruth Negga, Andre Holland, Bill Camp, Alexander Skarsgard
Writer - Rebecca Hall
Director - Rebecca Hall
Release - 10 November 2021

Fun fact, Rebecca Hall is part black. I would have never guessed. And this was a passion project of hers, obviously with some real life experiences of her own.

Underneath the subject of a black person passing off as white, was the relationship between the two women played by Tessa Thompson and Ruth Negga in their respective best.

While the story tells of the growing relationship, started off friendly and then becoming strained, we had to go through a lot of plot points to peel off the layers slowly just to get to the ending. And that climax at the end lasted maybe five minutes, so in terms of pay off it didn't feel like it was worth the wait.

Also, the trailers gave quite an inaccurate impression of what the movie was going to be in terms of the two leads' relationship. So I went in with a bit of a misconception. But that was minor to the enjoyment of the film.

But as a first time writer-director, Hall shows a lot of promise with telling the drama and shooting a tension-filled climax that surprised the audience.
