I was not ready for Rhys Ifans in this movie. He was a delight to watch. I haven't had this much fun with a new character in a long time.
And I was not ready for how good this movie was, considering the sequel was terrible. I'd like to think Vaughn has redeemed himself with this one. It's not as good as The Kingsmen: The Secret Service, of course; but this, to me, was the true follow-up.
Fiennes' character wasn't as skilled as Colin Firth, but his charisma was an equal and he carried the movie just as well. Djimon Honsou and Gemma Arteton supported well but I wished they had more to do as a team.
The action sequences, like the first movie, was a lot of fun and definitely a highlight for the movie. Unfortunately, the first big sequence was the best, followed by the second one in the battlefield. The final fight wasn't as exciting as the first two, though it was still very much enjoyable.
But it was clear that this was an origin story, and so there were plots that needed to be established to be able to create The Kingsmen. While I yearn to see a proper team in action, especially with how this movie ended and the first team was setup, I think that's not where the strength of the franchise lie. Like the original movie, the more the story is contained, between a mentor and a mentee, that's where the story shines.
But also, that's not to say Vaughn can't do a proper team movie. He's done one of the better X-Men movies after all.
