What a surprise! This movie took my breath away. There was so much heart, and this Rossi family felt so real together. And the chemistry and humour between them felt so genuine.
The first act brought so much laughter that I just wasn't ready for them. And seeing Eugenio Derbez popped up was an added bonus. And while every one was great, the big revelation here was Emilia Jones. She carried the movie with every frame, her acting was so good that I thought she really knew how to sign, and then she started singing too.
The movie had me when Troy Kotsur's character was signing some hilarious obscenities to Ferdia Walsh-Peelo's character, but the part that took my breath away was when Emilia Jones signed what singing meant to her.
Sian Heder wrote and directed this incredible and heartfelt story. The only part which I thought felt a little forced was how the family members didn't seem to communicate with one another during important events, and that seemed unrealistic. For a lesser movie, it would have been frustrating to sit through. But with how the story progressed and how good the cast as a whole were, it was easy to let it slide.
The movie has already garnered a lot of accolades, and if all four leads were to get Oscar nominations they would be well deserved. This also needs to be in the Best Picture conversation.
