You can really feel Murakami Haruki's influence if you are familiar with his work. Murakami likes to take you through a slow burn and have one moment in the end that wraps everything up. Hence, I thought Hamaguchi Ryusuke adapted that flavour very well.

I thought the cast was great. The driver played by Miura Toko was surprisingly the most interesting character, which I didn't expect. But it took Nishijima Hidetoshi's character in his own journey to compliment Miura's character.

And that journey where Hamaguchi was just trying to put on this play was captivating. Even though the pacing was slow, but there was something that was looming that would keep the audience interested enough to find out more.

And even though Hamaguchi's direction at most times felt like it didn't belong in the big screens but played more like a TV movie, the subject matter, coupled with some of Shinomiya Hidetoshi's cinematography, elevated the movie as a whole.
