Peter Dinklage is no Andrew Garfield when it comes to belting out songs, plus his American accent is questionable; but his onscreen presence is so large and so strong that there is no doubt he can carry a movie as a lead (or himself in parts of I Think We're Alone Now).
However, watching Cyrano, there were things that stood out that they shouldn't have. One was Kelvin Harrison Jr.'s very weak performance. Second was, I kept thinking could there have been a better actress playing Roxanne other than Haley Bennett - this was the first time I did not fully enjoy Bennett's performance. (Unlike Steve Martin and Daryl Hannah in Roxanne.)
But what Joe Wright did right was creating that push and pull between the two leads. Especially Dinklage's longing, the way he looked at Roxanne in the shadows while pouring his heart out.
I also enjoyed the production of this period piece, the balcony scene stood out especially which was probably my favourite scene.
Most importantly, the songs were beautiful and directed well. My favourite one, strangely, wasn't from the two leads; but during the scene when the soldiers were preparing for war or to die, that number was the most moving.
