This movie had two parts. The part in and around the circus - which was the first half; and then the second half which was outside the circus.
The first half was clear, concise and interesting. Colourful characters and a linear plot. When it transitioned to the second part, I wanted to go back to the circus. It felt like something good has prematurely ended.
The second part never took hold of my attention. Cate Blanchett's character didn't make sense. I didn't understand her motivation nor her intentions. And Rooney Mara's character felt like everything interesting about her got sucked out right after she left the circus.
As the main character, Bradley Cooper had an interesting arc. But as a follow-up to his Oscar performance in A Star Is Born, and just like Guillermo del Toro's Oscar-winning The Shape Of Water; Nightmare Alley wasn't a worthy successor to both.
