Scott Derrickson left Marvel's Doctor Strange sequel to do this movie. Sounds like a bad move on the surface, but if you were leaving Marvel for anything, it better be something strong. The Black Phone was something strong.
This, having being adapted from a novel from Joe Hill, wasn't similar to your typical Hollywood horror. The apple didn't fall far from the Stephen King tree; and anytime you have Stephen King story, it usually comes with something of a different flair.
The concept of the black phone in the room was great. And how Derrickson used it in the scenes were some of the great parts of the movie. The scares were not jump-scares, but from its atmosphere and story; so that always sits well with me.
And Ethan Hawke's performance was one that will be memorable alongside his turn in Moon Knight. He clearly is having a great year.
