I've seen quite a number of David O. Russell's movies but I don't remember the editing being this erratic for his previous movies.
Something about the way the movie was being presented just did not work. Especially in the first act when we were just getting to know what the movie was about, the way Margot Robbie spoke -or tried to speak - French; the way the scenes were stitched together, and how John David Washington didn't feel like the right casting choice as one of the leads; all these added up to a terrible beginning.
Second act started to feel better as now we got a sense of where the story was going. Out of all these names in the movie, Anya Taylor-Joy was the one that felt like she belonged. And sharing a screen with Robbie and Washington and Rami Malek, she out-acted everyone; other than Christian Bale who once again disappeared into his role. His performance stood out and really made his co-stars looked bad.
I don't think this was a very well-written script. It felt all over the place. The romanticism of the Amsterdam concept felt forced and unnecessary, and could have shorten the movie a little bit. Even the climax of the movie was nothing memorable.
