The kind of writing and directing from Pathe and BBC Films felt very paint-by-numbers. With every story point there will be a beat in the next scene that was painfully obvious in order to drive the story to the next point.
But other than that, this was well directed by Philippa Lowthorpe and with such a splendid cast. Especially Rhys Ifans and Greg Kinnear who were a joy to watch. The only actor that I thought was played to a cliche was the great Jessie Buckley's character and I wished she would have gone with a different direction.
And a good angle of the story here was to show the two different sides of the argument. The one against the whole concept of the Miss World competition, but also the one from the contestants.
