First thought I had while watching the first act of this movie was that this didn't feel like it's shot for the big screen. It felt like a TV movie somehow, and after a while into the movie, I thought it would have played better as a series.
The story in each act could have been split up into episodes and if they had done that, the story could have been expanded and told better.
But the production for the movie spared no budget. The army camps, the look of the uniform, the cinematography showing off the locations; they all look fantastic and real.
Also the cast look really good. Especially leading actor Felix Kammerer, to see his journey from the beginning - a wide-eyed and naive teenager - to having the war really changed him to his core; Kammerer played that really well.
I didn't like the jumping back and forth to see those sitting in the comfort of their "palace" and eating to their fill, or introducing the parts of Daniel Bruhl's character; they interrupted the flow of the war section which could be blamed on editing.
But even with my complaint, I thought the story was complete by the end of it. Kammerer's character was given a full arc that made the audience felt for him.
