I liked how Barbarian was marketed very subtly and revealed nothing. The surprise we have gotten in the second half was splendid.

The writing and direction by Zach Cregger was the reason the movie worked as well as it did (until I get to my negative part of the review). There was never any jump scares, which just showed how you could make a thrilling horror movie just from how you direct the movie. It was all about showing darkness, pausing on an angle or scene and letting the audience's imagination fill that space.

Georgina Campbell and Bill Skarsgard had great chemistry in the beginning. Campbell's performance stood out even though she didn't have to carry the whole movie.

There was a few scenes with really great sound mixing. From that first time we got to see Campbell's character in her car, that edit was so creepy that it got to me.

While I understand why the story needed to switch gears a couple of times in the movie, it did distract from an already great flow. If we could have just stayed at the house for the duration of the movie, it probably may have worked better.

Also while one of the scenes were put in in order to tell the origin of the movie, however, some things were not explained, like how the bedroom door opened. And if it was done by the "monster", why would it need to do that?

Still, this was a great horror movie that had some good laughs as well. And if you didn't know the cast list, there was a great pop by an actor that I was very pleasantly surprise to see.
