A Guillermo del Toro movie is very recognizable, especially when it has monsters and creatures. Even the whale looked del Toro.
There definitely was a nice update in terms of story beats with the World War II in the background as there was a Mussolini character. That immediately made my mind click in terms of world that Pinocchio lived in, even though that particular section also contributed the a slower pacing.
The voicing of Geppetto, Pinocchio and Cricket were wonderful and apt. Especially David Bradley and Ewan McGregor, who were really captivating. As for Pinocchio by Gregory Mann, there was such a great character growth from the first time he came alive and becoming a nuisance straight away, to moving me to tears at the end of it.
Ron Perlman as the main antagonist Podesta was also an inspired choice.
Stop-motion has always been a wonder, and coupled with the direction from both del Toro and Mark Gustafson - they created a beautiful and fantastical world for us to visit.
