Jennifer Lawrence once again reminded us just how great an actress she is. From the first shot of her, she has transformed into her character. It's always such a treat to watch her work her craft.
At first, I was sceptical as to why Brian Tyree Henry was nominated, not that I don't think he's a great performer, just that maybe there are others who have done better this year. But in that pool scene, I believed. That closeup look on his face after Lawrence's character did something she shouldn't have, he gave us so many layers of emotions in that one look.
The movie's first half constantly had me wondering where this story was going. I would have preferred a clearer direction. The second saw some growth in Lawrence's character but unlike, say, To Leslie, where there was a huge payoff at the end; this was more of a quieter one.
But the relationship between the two main leads had a nice blossom. And their meaningful looks in the final scene was very tender and heartfelt.
