"A little bit of life."
This was an Olivia Colman showcase. Sam Mendes brought out the best in her, while she probably brought out Mendes' best, too.
And Roger Deakins was at it again. From the very first shot, every frame was a picture that was beautifully and intentionally created. Empire Of Light was also a Deakins showcase.
Mendes wrote a very beautiful piece of story as well for Colman, who played it with so much care. Her character had so much grief and yearning, and Michael Ward - whom I've never seen before - gave his character so much growth playing opposite Colman.
Colin Firth gave another brilliant performance, being the bad guy we love to hate. But there are compliments that needed to be given to Toby Jones who had a great monologue inside the projection room. Actually, every scene inside the projection room was a masterpiece - thanks to Deakins as well.
I've seen Tom Brooke in a few things before but this performance was the one that will make me remember him.
