Racial abuse of the mid 90's are well documented on film throughout the last decade. To go through Till's first act felt more like a rehash to a story seen many times, not that I'm making light of the situation or anything; just as a piece of entertainment it was like going through the motions.
Till really kicked into the next level once Danielle Deadwyler portrayed that anguish and anger and sadness all at once when she saw her dead boy come back to her.
There were also quite a few powerful scenes. My favourite was the one where she had a conversation with John Douglas Thompson's character by a lake. It spoke volumes about the situation they were forced to face, decisions that were inhumane to make.
The injustice of it all wouldn't sit well in your stomach. But a well adapted story, well directed, and I'm surprised it was completely shut out from the Oscar race.
At the very least, Jazmine Sullivan's "Stand Up" should have been nominated for Best Song instead of Rihanna's.
