"No such thing as bad publicity," - or at least in this case, it holds true. The sudden rise to nomination for Andrea Riseborough has garnered the world's attention and it is a good thing for the movie. Otherwise I would not have known the brilliance of this movie.
While it's first act was slow, and also because it was not easy to see the affects of alcoholism on the well-being of a person; the story picked up pace once Leslie decided enough was enough.
Riseborough's nomination isn't something that should be overlooked or blamed on. She gave a performance of a lifetime that affects you, makes you cheer for her and really feel everything at the final scene.
Marc Maron and Allison Janney also gave really strong supporting performances in service to Leslie's character's arc. And without them, that final scene wouldn't be that final scene.
A good story, no matter how slow you feel about the second act is, should evoke feelings at the end of it. This was a fine example of that.
