I think it's safe to say that the work of Kenya Barris is just not for me. Having seen a few of his stuff, I found the comedy very muted. Maybe it works for many others but it just isn't for me.

I didn't like very much as well how muted Eddie Murphy's performance was. This soft-spoken and gentle combination wasn't exciting for a caliber like Murphy.

And also, the story itself felt draggy and paced too slowly. The familial jokes and situations felt recycled. Plot points felt unconvincing, like when Hill pulled out the ring to propose. And this just screamed Barris' choice of storytelling which never went down well with me.

Julia Louis-Dreyfus and David Duchovny tried their best to be funny and awkward and make the audience feel uncomfortable because of how tone-deaf their characters were. They worked most of the time but sometimes not.

In the end, the story wanted to give it heartfelt moment; but again, did not feel very convincing enough.
