Bones And All was the film that I wasn't looking forward to last year, and it didn't garner any Academy Award buzz; and was I wrong!
This was easily one of the best films of last year and the snub from the Oscars was probably not Best Picture - unlike Luca Guadagnino's previous Oscar darling Call Me By Your Name - since it's about cannibalism (not sure how Oscars view the subject or if they would even promote something like this); but I thought Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross's original score could have won because it was that good.
I was amazed by at how Guadagnino told this story - a story about cannibalism - but with a beautiful romantic story at the same time. And Guadagnino didn't shy away from the cannibalistic visuals (just make sure you're not eating anything while watching this movie because the first time someone "ate" can be quite shocking); it was the backdrop for the entire movie.
But the way Guadagnino buildup the romance between Taylor Russell and Timothee Chalamet felt so real that by the end of it, just like Call Me By Your Name; and coupled with Reznor and Ross's score, you would feel that sense of longing and sadness as the movie stays with you after the credits started rolling.
Mark Rylance gave another great performance, but it was Michael Stuhlbarg and his makeup that gave the scariest performance without even trying to be. I really don't know what the Academy is waiting for before recognizing Stuhlbarg's brilliance.
The world that Guadagnino created here was a little fantastical but the characters were so grounded in verisimilitude that one would believe this world was real.
