I wished someone had told me that this movie wasn't made for me, so that I didn't waste a Sunday afternoon driving to the cinema for. I'm not a fan of the franchise, and this was the worst of those that I've seen. (I missed the Fede Alvarez and Jane Levy's Evil Dead.)
There's no story. The writer-director Lee Cronin didn't even bother hiding that fact. It was a gore fest. If you are a gore fan and just want a lot of blood on screen, maybe this will be for you. But there's nothing worse for me than watching a horror movie with no story. Things happen with no reason - like why would a spirit be able to act as a gramophone other than the director wanting to make a scene look "cool", using the character point her fingernail at the turntable acting as a needle, then her mouth dropped down wider than humanly possible and the record started playing.
The characters were bad, obviously, since there's no arc or development. So much so that I just wanted all of them to die horrible deaths so I could get out of the cinema. If anything, it just portrayed American teens as annoying idiots that always chooses to go down dark holes appearing in the ground rather than running away from it. I mean, if you see a scary looking book with long thin fangs acting as a lock, maybe leave it alone? Maybe for once show some respect to things that weren't meant for you to comprehend? Maybe be self-sufficient enough not to be curious at everything?
I will say, Alyssa Sutherland's performance, though looked painful to twist her facial expressions to achieve the horrific look, actually looked scary.
