If anyone has any doubts about how great an actor John Boyega is, just watch this movie.
I loved how the opening sequence just pulled me into the movie. From being escorted out to the steps in handcuffs to the camera slowly panning to see Boyega's expression, that was a great opening sequence.
And Boyega throughout the movie gave his best performance so far. He even came with a flawless American accent, or at least as far as I can tell. And it wasn't the makeup changed his appearance, it was his mannerisms coupled with wearing glasses; Boyega disappeared into this role.
Doug Emmett's cinematography also was an eye-catcher. There were many shots of just the interior of the bank, or the use of close-ups at different angles that really captured the tension and mood.
Nicole Beharie, Selenis Leyva and Michael K. Williams all gave wonderful performances.
What stopped this movie from becoming better or more memorable was how it ended. The director Abi Damaris Corbin pushed the final few scenes a bit too long for us to really feel for Boyega's character and be on his side; particularly that extended phone call with his daughter. To me, it just dragged on a little bit too long and slowed down the pacing.
But I do understand that there was no climax in this story. It had to end the way it did, but as an audience watching a piece of entertainment, it just didn't end deftly enough for me.
