I think Gene Stupnitsky must have thought he struck gold when Jennifer Lawrence signed on to this movie, because she really did not need to - but I guess it also depends on who you ask.
Ultimately, this was a great move for Lawrence, jumping into such a small movie but completely owning it. While most of the scenes were very basic when considering the caliber of Lawrence, but the little things she added in, like when there was no dialogue, just her at the table watching Andrew Barth Feldman singing "Maneater" on the piano, she made a choice to look away for a second and that conveyed so much of her emotion in that scene.
Of course, what proceeded during that song was also brilliant on Lawrence's part. And Feldman really owned his character, too, as this was really the work of a duo playing and feeding off each other.
The story didn't do anything new, but it didn't need to. It ended the only way it could end, and it was entertaining enough.
