It's baffling how much, even pundits who I thought had the same taste as I do, disapproval this movie has garnered; or how little the movie has made at the box office. I enjoyed it! What's everyone else watching?
Sure it's no masterpiece, but it's definitely not the worst thing out there. It's certainly more enjoyable than the other DC properties that came out recently, and more enjoyable than Quantumania.
The main antagonist played by Zawe Ashton didn't have a great backstory, she's very one note; but still a character with a better motivation than Lee Pace's Ronan - who shared the same background and that's why they wield similar-looking weapon. It's very simple, not sure why some people didn't get it. But the way she employed the use of the bangle with her weapon, that didn't come with a manual; and it's just one of those things in a fantasy story.
But there was enough motivation from the end of the first Captain Marvel movie that helped us sympathize with her, though she didn't have a lot of character development.
Another poorly written part of this story was when the trio visited the planet where everyone conversed by singing and dancing, only. I thought that was a lot of fun. But I wished we spent more time there; heck, make the runtime longer. It would have been fine.
And Park Seo Joon's character's fate was not even mentioned at the end of the movie. Ms Marvel left everyone there to "fend for themselves", Captain Marvel clearly spent some time there on the planet, and by the end of the movie all we saw was that she just gave away that commemorative plate? This was terrible writing.
Teyonah Parris, I'm just very sorry to say, didn't shine nor sparkle. I thought it was because she had such a small role back in WandaVision. But in a movie that she co-lead, she was unmemorable. And, not her fault, but I didn't care for her character when she had to stay to close the portal at the end.
The shiniest star here definitely was Iman Vellani. Her infectious charm and personality carried over easily from her TV series, and honestly, there should have played more into her fangirling out in front of Captain Marvel. The two had a chemistry that we could easily get on board with, but we very quickly were shoved into the reality of things when Captain Marvel ordered Ms. Marvel to leave people behind in a dying planet.
I also disliked the plot point where the Flerkens devoured everyone else on the space base, but why not the Khans? They were only civilians, so why make them special there?
And also, even when the trio came together in the superhero shot when going up against Dar-Benn, it wasn't an impressive shot. Actually, the best action sequence of the entire movie was the first one - when the three superheroes were discovering that every time when two of them use their powers at the exact same time they will swap places. That was the most fun.
