I just saw Sandra Huller in Munich: Edge Of War which came out much earlier in the year. A small but memorable performance.
And here she was leading the movie with a powerhouse of a performance. She was soft spoken but she filled the screen every time she was on it. Watching her, I could always know exactly the depth of her emotions in any particular scene. She is my front runner for the Oscars.
I thought young Milo Machado Graner also gave a wonderful performance, but perhaps the lack of experience got the better of him at the end when he had a few close-up shots and he took me out of the movie a little.
There was also a great supporting cast in Swann Arlaud (he's probably billed as male lead), Antoine Reinartz, and Samuel Theis who provided Huller her one burst of anger and emotion in a flashback scene that was haunting. That exchange in dialogue was some of the best writing I've seen this year.
Reinartz courtroom performance was great. And I have seen too much American courtroom drama so I was pleasantly surprised by the calmness and less-dramatized, real depiction of what goes on in a courtroom; which was refreshing. Not a single "objection!" shouting-match happened, though I did anticipated many times.
If this movie doesn't end up as a contender, I will be very upset with every other nomination.
