Winners in bold.
Here are some thoughts about Oscar night.
There was always that chance that The Boy And The Heron could steal it from Spider-Man, seeing this was Hayao Miyazaki's final film and he's never won an Oscar. I'm very disappointed at this result because Spider-Man was ranked second in my Top 10 list while The Boy And The Heron, I thought, was a mess of a story.
How did Barbie not win Production Design? The whole Barbieland looked lived in, whereas Poor Things didn't. But the latter winning Costume Design was apt.
I am continuously baffled with America's obsession with Billie Eilish. I don't understand how that could be considered "singing", just as baffled as how Drake could be categorized as "rapping". "I'm Just Ken" had a more meaningful impact in the movie, and so that should be taken into consideration. And we also saw which song out of the two had a better presentation on Oscar night, too.
But what I was most disappointed with the Oscar night was how they cut off the Godzilla: Minus One VFX team leader's speech. There were plenty of other winners who were given leeway, so I have to conclude the reason he got played off was because no one understood what he was saying. You could tell he was doing his best and English wasn't a language he could converse in. But he tried, he tried to allow the world to at least catch what he was trying to convey. I bet if any of us in a role reversal, had to go to Japan to stand on a stage and to give a speech, we would have done it in a language we were comfortable in; and not even attempt to speak in Japanese. But he didn't. Sure, he should have gotten an interpreter like how Bong Joon Ho did his. But still, there was no class in what went down - even though an award ceremony like this had no real impact in the world. But still.
In the end, this year, I am 8 for 13 - exactly the same as last year. It could have been higher, but I thought the Academy would crown Lily Gladstone instead of Emma Stone because this was the first time a native American was nominated (politics and agenda play as large a role as art itself, whether we like it or not). But, of course, I thought Stone should win and she did.
I had both Screenplay categories wrong, but they were such close calls that I am also happy the winners won instead of my picks.
