I have to wonder if this movie would have gathered a lot more clout come award season had it not been for Will Smith's infamous slap at the Oscars. No one saw this movie, it wasn't talked about, and it just went into the dead of night.
And everyone who worked on this movie wasted their time and money. Nevertheless, if you did manage to catch it, you would have seen this was another amazing performance by Smith, who may or may not have picked up another Academy Award nomination in this role. He really transformed himself here and it was a performance that should have captured the world's attention.
The movie wasn't the best. Antoine Fuqua's movies rarely shoot to the stratosphere but still, this was an amazingly and beautifully shot, frame by frame. The colour gradient added to the overall feel of the tone.
Ben Foster's antagonist was lackluster - a typical character for him to embody so nothing that stood out. Charmaine Bingwa as the wife had the second best performance after Smith. Everyone else was just serviceable.
It goes without saying, then, the movie was carried by Smith. And by the end of it, after seeing his arduous journey and to make it back to his wife; that was quite touching.
