Kevin Hart was such a miscast. You can't have Kevin Hart play it straight when the movie was this whimsical in nature.
However, the rest of the cast was decent enough. Jamie Lee Curtis was the MVP here, she knew what her character needed to look like and act, and she delivered. Cate Blanchett looks 10 years younger here under this filter, but there were times you could tell she was trying hard to care about the scene when CGI characters were beside her.
The weakest link, though, was the director Eli Roth. This was not in his wheelhouse. He isn't suitable to direct a big CGI fest and with this kind of whimsical tone. The edits just didn't stitch his scenes together to be inline with what the tone wanted to be. Some scenes were just too over-the-top or didn't have enough preamble nor context to get there. So it landed flat.
With such a deft lead in Blanchett, this should have been a slam dunk. But it's the worst movie I've seen this year.
