Pablo Larrain's movies tend to be a slow burn and sometimes the ending just doesn't have that pay off. I'm more surprised here about Steven Knight's writing that didn't really culminate a little towards the end, considering he's responsible for "Peaky Blinders".
Angelina Jolie was no less mesmerizing. I was pleasantly surprised and somewhat shocked to have found out that she was actually singing as an opera singer.
She was flanked by two great performances from Pierfrancesco Favino and Alba Rohrwacher. Only Kodi-Smit McPhee felt very out of place, as if he's acting in a different movie. I never liked dream sequences and, even though there were a couple that hinted at the sanity of Jolie's Maria, and McPhee was part of those sequences, but they just didn't kept my attention here.
While the ending was meant to stir up emotions in the audience, I didn't felt that there were enough along the journey to coax up any strong emotions in the end.
