I did not know this movie existed (blaming it on Covid) until I saw the sequel was came out this month. I even thought it was a live-action until the movie started playing.

It opened to a hilarious introductory scene of Tayi Zhenren, but after that the jokes played more like an American-influenced style more than anything; which kind of played like a cheap imitation (but that's what China is great at).

I almost chalked this up to a kids movie half way through until Ne Zha's confrontation with the water demon, actually fulfilling certain minor plot points that I thought were important to see to their conclusion, like Ne Zha burning down a whole village. It wasn't to my complete satisfaction but at least it was kind of addressed.

And then from there on, the storytelling's inclination towards big-picture storyline was what got me hooked. The conflict within Ne Zha, the emotions of his parents, and also that of his one and only friend; I thought all these were presented well.

Plus, the final fight had some very good sequences with gags mixed into it. It wasn't original, but it was enjoyable.
