This was a special kind of horror movie. It was beautiful and terrifying. Eggers' use of black and white, shadow and light, to great effect, with great cinematography from Jarin Blaschke.
I could tell why Eggers went for the less experienced Lily-Rose Depp. She probably had that look he was aftering. But when she shared the screen with Emma Corrin, there's no hiding her inexperience. She didn't quite inherit the talents of her parents.
Everyone else, though, was great. Nicholas Hoult had a great year with three great performances. Bill Skarsgard continues to rein the tall-and-scary-creature department. Dafoe and Ralph Ineson, frequent collaborators of Eggers', could do no wrong but shine.
There were some shots that harkened back to the old black-and-white pictures, and updated with Eggers' signature style.
Even though there were no scares, and we could see Orlok almost from the get-go, his presence whenever he appeared always carried a sense of foreboding that emanated from the screen. It's, like I said, special.
