Gran Torino (6/10)
OK, Mr. Eastwood. You've ventured into this small scale, small production, indie kind of flick; now please go back to what you do best. There's something very wrong right from the start. I had no idea going on so I really didn't know what to make of it. The tone of the movie was so serious that it felt wrong to laugh at the beginning. I couldn't decide whether this was a comedy or a drama. But it went in and out from the two that sometimes the flow wasn't there. And in the end it became a thriller. I think Clint Eastwood tried to do too much here. His disgruntled character stemmed from his past self as a war hero and at times when he lashed out, it certainly reminded of his Dirty Harry days. There's nothing wrong with what Eastwood has created here. His acting was still a pleasant watch and his direction had no faults. But the rest of the cast I thought was just horrible and not even close to Eastwood's level. They made the film felt very B-rated and if that's what Eastwood was going for, then fine. But I thought that standards were compromised greatly. And was it just me or at certain times, few scenes reminded me of what typically Quentin Tarantino would produce?
