Charlie St. Cloud (5/10)
[caption id="attachment_1928" align="alignleft" width="214" caption="(imdb.com)"][/caption]This movie relied heavily on the charisma of Zac Efron. He was used in almost every scene and there was both good and bad to that. The good. Efron has the charisma, charms and looks of a leading man. He's a competent actor and has enough fan base to headline his own movie. The bad. Efron is still not all there yet. He's not the superstar that he can be, yet, in stature and also in skill. Hence, in this movie, sometimes there were some things out of alignment. You can't be sure what that thing is but there's just something off as Efron tried to give you his best.Perhaps partly also because of the story which treads very closely to being a fantasy. I would have liked to see it as a 100% drama but that was not to be. And with this crossover between drama and fantasy, it reminded me a little of The Lovely Bones that also didn't quite leave the mark that it could have. But for fans of Efron, I'm sure this was a delight. But for the rest of us, it was just OK. The story wasn't fantastic. The acting could have been better (but also could have been worse). It just wasn't interesting enough. Director Burr Steers' previous collaboration with Efron in 17 Again fared much better.
