Sucker Punch (6/10)

Not sure what to make of this in the beginning but by the end I was sort of hooked.

It started off quite hesitantly for me, reminded me of Inception even - a dream within a dream. And when the first action sequence started, it became one of those over-the-top action movies that made no sense. And worst of all, the three menacing samurais were brought down too easily without much of anything.

It got easier to swallow once the premise has been set and things became clearer as to where the direction of the movie was going. The action sequences, too, became better to take in. Though this was no 300, and far from the brilliance of Watchmen, Zack Snyder's signature was as clear as day in the dark, dark premise throughout the entire movie.

Emily Browning couldn't have pouted anymore if her life depended on it. Especially with her little school girl uniform and "suggestive" dance moves, she raced into our minds as a porn star. But character-depth wise, there wasn't much to go on. Each task and "key" she and her teammates needed to obtain didn't add on any more layer to any of the characters, unlike Inception.

Vanessa Hudgens and Jamie Chung were not utilised properly - when they had a dramatic breakdown it wasn't believable at all. Abbie Cornish also didn't had a nice character development as she was supposed to be leader of the pack. Only Jena Malone had more screentime and attention.

The only actor that truly shone Oscar Isaac, and to a certain extent, Carla Gugino. Jon Hamm was certainly a surprise addition.

Plotholes weren't even plotholes anymore as logic didn't play any part at all in this movie. But visually, it was undeniably fabulous. Though whatever made 300 interesting wasn't found here.

One thing it got going for it was the incredible soundtrack. And one thing Snyder got right was to include as many of these beautifully haunting songs as he could.

When the movie reached the last act, I was hooked (even as bad as the plot was). I absolutely loved how it ended. And I found myself asking the question, would I watch it again? The answer, yes.
