This movie was carried wholly by Kidman and her brilliant performance. I believe because of her, her co-stars became better as well. Aaron Eckhart stepped up to match her, and so did Dianne Wiest.
It's even a little scary to be able to see and feel Kidman's character's pain through her eyes. Kidman made her role so believable that there was no doubt about the way she felt in every frame.
A story as dramatic as this one always is difficult to entertain because it really needs the actors to carry the story. So even though the pacing was a little slow with little going on, the cast here really made it work and enjoyable to sit through.
