Water For Elephants (6/10)

Not sure if Robert Pattinson was the best fit here but he's definitely had more to offer than just a vampire.

I have to compare this to The Notebook because it reminded me very much of it the way it opened. As soon as I saw the old man, I knew how it was going to play out - just like The Notebook. To be fair, I'm sure there were plenty more great love stories played out in movies this way but I can't think of any right now.

Obviously this love story has a strong storyline to back it up as it hailed from a novel. I thought the execution by Francis Lawrence was good, albeit a little slow at times in the middle. The most jarring mistake made was in the third act when the escape happened, and it was over way too quickly and too easily. But I guess I can see how that was definitely not the part to focus too much on as the essence of the story happened in the camp.

And because Christoph Waltz was in the camp. He has done it again, bringing his character to life, with charisma that you just love to hate and hate to love. I personally can't wait to see him in the remake of The Three Musketeers.

The chemistry between Pattinson and Reese Witherspoon wasn't over the top and I thought it could have been better. Witherspoon this time turned in a more quiet performance and somehow didn't really make the audience root for her.

As a love story that's supposed to be of epic proportions, it's all about the two leads making ga-ga eyes at each other and not much of anything else going on, apart from the occasional animal interaction. But it's not as epic as The Notebook (or how epic that was made out to be).
