Paul (7/10)

Here's another that I almost skipped because the trailer looked silly. But I was so wrong.

It did start a bit slow, and this was my first movie to the dynamic duo that is Simon Pegg and Nick Frost. So getting to know them in the beginning took to a slow start. But the story gradually built after meeting Paul the alien - voiced by Seth Rogen, and went into high gear when Kirsten Wiig's character was introduced. From then on, the movie never looked back; and it became a swearing fest too though that provided a whole lot of laughter.

We also got a few nice short appearances by familiar faces like Jeffrey Tambor, Jane Lynch, David Koechner, Jesse Plemons, Joe Lo Truglio and Bill Hader. But the best surprise was right at the end when the big bad guy was introduced. And I thought they were very clever to keep that face hidden throughout the movie because it really added the "umph" at the movie's climax.

And another favourite actor of mine, Jason Bateman, gave a great performance here, adding to another twist at the end. I've never seen Bateman in a role like this and he really brought some crazy, intense eyes. I thought he was brilliant, and delivered one of the best lines in the movie that was just purely profanity.

What made Paul so good at the end of the day was that it had a lot of heart, and a lot of great humour with a few laugh-out-loud moments.

The only thing that baffled me greatly was how there wasn't any censorship at all for this to be played in the local cinemas. Many other movies with even less swear words never made it here, or had a lot of censorships, but this had zero. And not to mention how many other movies with religious undertones also never made it here. But this one, while making fun of a certain religion, had a free pass. Makes one wonder of the reason, the unprofessionality, and consistency...
