But Cars 2, it was just like how I felt for Hanna. The graphics and images were just gorgeous and I expected nothing less from Pixar. But the story and execution didn't leave me with a lot of feelings or emotions. Actually, that's not fair. There were feelings, but they were negative.
I didn't think it was right to push the character of Mater voiced by Larry The Cable Guy to the spotlight. He was irritating. And yet, he took up most of the screen time compared to Owen Wilson's character McQueen. But I guess this was what Pixar wanted and it was a gamble that didn't pay off.
And of all the other Pixar titles, I'm just baffled why they would want to do a sequel for Cars first. I would have gone with Monsters, Inc. or The Incredibles; or even WALL-E. Those would have better potential than Cars. I didn't like the first one and I know it's personal, but Cars would be the last title on the list of my favourite Pixar/Disney cartoons. I don't even remember what Cars was about.
For Cars 2, it started off brilliantly with a James Bond setting, introducing Michael Cain's character with all those gadgets and spy stuff. That was entertaining. Unfortunately, it all went downhill after that. I don't even remember laughing at anything because the jokes were just not interesting enough. The best one was the "average intelligence" one that was shown in the trailer already so no big surprise there. And still, worst choice for a cast member, Bonnie Hunt as McQueen's love interest. I have no idea why they used her back in the first one and now they have to keep her.
What let the movie down was the writing. There was nothing original about it. It was just about mixing car-racing with James Bond. And there wasn't any of the Disney or Pixar spark at all, although the message from the movie was still a great one.
And as smart as Caine's character was, I just found it crazy that he was so blind as to who Mater really was.
