Not sure what the reviewers were watching but this was significantly better.
Yes, the pacing really needed work. To certain extent, the storytelling too as I thought it wasn't as easy to understand as I would have liked it, even with subtitles.
Plus was it really necessary to flash the characters' names just for the sake of history? It only confused the audience more, or at least I was. Unless you are a history buff, most of the characters introduced rarely appeared more than twice so the names were quite useless. Not to mention there were so many of them too.
And for a Jackie Chan-headlined movie, this was a better one from him. It was serious, real and humourless. So for Chan, it was fresh to see him in a movie like this.
Plus, the cinematography was excellent. The scene really captured the feel and texture of that time and place. This in itself was a big plus.
But, the movie was too long and it dragged. And there never was a big finish for such a movie that had the epic proportion feel to it.
