Newbie Dakota Goyo gave a very good portrayal for his young character, blending wise-beyond-years with child-like fascinations charisma.
Hugh Jackman no doubt was the main pull in this movie and he was part of the reason why this movie had heart. As the audience, you can't help but root for him.
And it's about time Evangeline Lilly got into a big movie like this one. I'm surprised her exposure in Lost took this long to land her here. However, I thought she could have had a bigger role or showed more acting ability. Nevertheless, she still did what was required.
The robots were exciting to watch. I thought the CGI was really good despite the fact that you never saw the robots bend down to get into the fighting ring. The editing could have been smoother but the action sequences were all very good.
Still, there wasn't anything surprisingly good about the movie. It's quite predictable but I don't mean it in a disappointing way. Just that it didn't bring the audience to a different level. Even with some futuristic feel to it, even with robots fighting as a sport, everything else was still kept quite present and "down to earth". And not that it didn't work, just that it didn't get anywhere else that's more exciting.
