The Last Stand (7/10)

Arnie is back in action movies. And The Last Stand was a solid come-back movie for him.

The plot was super simple. In fact, it might have been too simple for a lot of the audience's taste. But I thought it worked. This was an action movie through and through, and I thought the action sequences delivered; even with an aged Schwarzenegger delivering punchlines and bullets.

What I didn't like was how the trailer showed a significant amount of Forest Whitaker and the movie poster had Johnny Knoxville sharing the visual almost 50-50. But in the actual movie, both of them had less than one-fifth of screen time. Most of the bigger names were under-utilised. Instead, Rodrigo Santoro and Luis Guzman were featured more, with Guzman providing more comedy.

Lastly, the slight addition of gore was a nice touch by director Kim Jee-Woon. I would go as far as saying that the gore made the whole movie more entertaining.
