Behind The Candelabra (7/10)

There seems to be a certain kind of sequence with these movies on famous celebrities of the past. And this one was no different.

I loved that opening scene with Scott Bakula blowing out smoke from his cigarette and then coming into focus. I thought that was masterful.

The movie had a lot of the audience in Singapore's Shaw Lido snickering in the first half an hour as they slowly got used to the "softness" in the acting of Michael Douglas and Matt Damon. Needless to say, they were the masters of their craft; especially Douglas who really has outdone himself this time. A nomination should be coming his way for this portrayal of Liberace; for both him and Damon and I wouldn't be surprised.

I for one had no real or concrete experience with Liberace so I didn't have the interest to find out more about him. But the story was told with a lot of heart and a lot of character development. Also sprinkled with some light humour here and there.

However, it's somewhat predictable what all these past celebrities have done with their life and love life. You could guess right from the beginning what's going to happen, just didn't know how exactly.

Another standout here was also Dan Aykroyd. Even with a somewhat small role but he still came through with a lot of magnetism in his performance.
