The Conjuring (8.5/10)

If you know me, you'll know I have a lot of ticks with today's horror movies. I don't go into a cinema just so a director can scare the shit out of me. I want the story to scare me, not the sound effects.

And while The Conjuring wasn't perfect, it wasn't too bad too. Actually, it's probably one of the best ones of recent years. James Wan is a good storyteller. Most of what he offered made sense. Most, except a few scenes which I didn't disagree with.

One being when Vera Farmiga's character fell from inside the wall, I couldn't understand what Patrick Wilson was doing not going down to the cellar. That was a bad call by Wan.

But I was surprised to see Wilson in another horror movie. He's was just in Insidious and he will be in Insidious 2 real soon. Plus the sequel to this one would also follow soon after. However, it's definitely to his best interest that he joined The Conjuring cast as this was a much better film of the two.

What I loved about this movie was, like I said, was the storytelling; the suspense created through each scene, all that mood and the emotional ride that subtly came and softly but firmly hit the audience as the minutes passed. The layers and layers of the story that slowly unfolded and the hints and teases all added in by Wan were very cleverly done in class.

I certainly hope Wan comes back for more.
