I seldom blame Hollywood for stupid movies but this one I do. And I would compare the level of "sickness" to that of The Human Centipede. And it's movies like these that make me question the intelligence level of the people who sits in their office and say, "Yes, let's make this movie so that we can earn some revenue by testing the human limits." Because there will always be the weaker ones that will attempt to emulate what they see and take it to an inhuman level.
While the premise disgusted me, there were a few times Ethan Hawke and Lena Headey redeemed themselves with their level of performance.
However, more often than not, it's the story progression that also became unrealistic, especially when the assailants broke into the house. Because right from the beginning I didn't and couldn't get a sense of space. It seemed like it's so big a house that even with more than 10 people in it, you can still be alone in a room.
And with the movie already taking the plunge in this direction of "purging", the ending was somewhat of a let down for me as nothing much happened. The attempt to be human again was too little too late. Some idiot out there may already crossed the bridge.
