First, a potential contender for the Oscar next year is the score for this movie. It was really moving and suited the atmosphere (no pun intended) really well.
Second, Sandra Bullock and George Clooney gave awesome voice performances. Why I say voice performances? Because of how this was shot in space, there weren't much more that the actors could do with their body and so most of the emotions and expressions came from their vocal variety, and they were wonderful. Not forgetting Ed Harris too who we didn't get to see at all.
I'm not sure how much to credit director Alfonso Cuaron for this moving masterpiece. On one hand, it seemed like almost everything was shot with CGI. On the other, he did tell a gripping and compelling story. The danger of each scene felt so real, it's as if I was there with them.
I thought Clooney made a great decision to join this movie because his role was to pull at the audience's heartstrings. He is so likeable as a person and an actor, and that's why he could do what he did in this movie and affect the audience so much.
Why I left out the 0.5 was because I felt there were too much of unfortunate events happening in a span of an hour. It was like kicking Bullock when she's down on her luck. That itself just took out the realism of it for me. But in the grand scheme of things, this was almost negligible. Almost.
I also loved how the movie ended, with gravity. The whole thing was kind of poetic.
