Captain Phillips (9/10)

It's been a while since I saw a really awesome Tom Hanks performance. Captain Phillips did not disappoint at all.

Paul Greengrass directed the movie with fantastic pacing. Once the ship started its journey, things kept happening without missing a beat. And with each scenario created, he directed to nail-biting suspense and the viewer could really feel the tension and anxiety felt by the crew of Maersk Alabama.

Hanks' performance was fantastic. Every word that came out of his mouth was also an acting performance in itself. It was just a top-notch character performance by Hanks as he showed us when he's scared, anxious, losing control and fighting for control. From the moment the ship was boarded, to the very end when he was rescued, he made sure he brought the audience along with him.

A lot of buzz has been around Barkhad Abdi. Yes, he looked great; but not to what all the hype has been. I'm not as convinced.

The best performance, however, came from Hanks, in those last five minutes. I never knew what "in shock" meant until today when I watched Hanks acted it out with such realism. He made me feel like I now have an inkling of what that term means. And he moved me, to tears; as I watched his character, felt his character, and his sense of overwhelmed release.

Definitely can expect to see a nomination for Hanks.
